Yesterday evening, the San Francisco Oneness group was graced by the presence of Dr. Prabhat Poddar, Chief Architect and Designer for the Golden City Oneness Temple Project in southern India.
Poddar shared with the group information about the rich architectural history of ancient traditions. Not only were structures magnificent like the Pyramids of Egypt, they had built into them a deep understanding of the energy of the building and its influence on occupants. He also discussed his research into ancient traditions and how this research is enabling him to bring the sacred (the essence) back into modern architecture. Dr. Poddar hopes to recreate our spaces so that in addition to their functional use, these corrected structures will also help the evolution of the human soul.
Poddar was born in Bombay in 1949 to a leading business family. When he was four years old, his family sold its businesses and moved to Pondicherry, India to live at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. He grew up there and studied civil engineering, architecture and town planning at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education.
Dr. Poddar was appointed by The Mother – the spiritual companion of Sri Aurobindo and founder of the International Township of Auroville – as Coordinator of the Auroville Planning Group (1970-1983). From 1983 to 1991, Poddar served as Coordinator of the Alternative Energies research team. He pursued research in the fields of geobiology and architecture, dealing with architecture and integral health, fulfilling a research interest he had initiated six years earlier.
Dr. Poddar’s mission in life is to help establish research in the ancient knowledge systems of India, as well as those of different cultures of the world. He and his wife Ila Poddar have established the Akash Foundation. For more information about Dr. Poddar’s background and his work, visit www.akashfoundation.com.
